28 Jul: Report on the consultation period for the proposal to expand the functions of PHARMAC
This report from Dr David Sage, former Chief Medical Officer for Auckland District Health Board, to the Minister of Health provides the outcomes of a period of consultation with the health sector on a proposal for PHARMAC to have a greater role in the assessment, prioritisation and procurement of hospital medicines and a limited range of medical devices.

This publication provides information on the numbers of women who have gave birth in hospital; and the number of liveborn babies that were born either in hospital or born prior to their mother's admission to hospital (usually following birth outside hospital) in the 2006 calendar year.

24 Jun: Close-contact infectious diseases in New Zealand: Trends in ethnic inequalities in hospitalisations, 1989 to 2008
This report describes the epidemiology of infectious diseases and close-contact infectious diseases (CCIDs) for the 20-year period from 1989 to 2008, with a specific focus on ethnic inequalities, with a focus on Māori.

The chart book presents key indicators relating to the socioeconomic determinants of health, risk and protective factors for health, health status, health service utilisation, and the health system.

4 Jun: Seroprevalence of the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) pandemic in New Zealand
The Ministry commissioned study, conducted by ESR, estimates that 1.26 million or 29% of New Zealanders were immune to the pandemic influenza virus by March this year.

The Minister of Health has announced a review of pharmacy recalls that will be completed within a month.

The six-year strategic plan provides a high-level framework to guide the structure, delivery and direction of Ministry-funded problem gambling services and activities. It also outlines strategic alliances with other key stakeholders and organisations with an interest in preventing and minimising gambling harm.

12 May: Issuing Permissions for Vertebrate Toxic Agents (VTAs): Guidelines for Public Health Units
These guidelines will assist officers in: assessing the hazard and risk posed by a proposed VTA operation, applying the appropriate Model Permit Conditions, modifying the Model Permit Conditions in response to the specific risk profile of each VTA operation. The guidelines will also help officers to appropriately communicate the risks of these operations to affected parties.

Ta'iala mo Tufuga Tā Tatau a Sāmoa (Samoan)
These guidelines address measures to improve the safety of customary tattooing and are of relevance to tattooists, public health units and Medical Officers of Health.

14 Apr: Guidance for Improving Supportive Care for Adults with Cancer in New Zealand
The Supportive Care Guidance document provides clear objectives, and suggests best-practice service approaches that will help to ensure that adults with cancer, their families and whānau have access to the supportive care they need throughout the various stages of cancer, from diagnosis onwards.
